Nature. Environment. Sustainability. Transformation.
NEST is an independent, non-profit organisation created to turn environmental knowledge into meaningful action.
We bring together science, innovation, people and territories to address some of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time. Our work focuses on developing and supporting practical, evidence-based solutions that contribute to healthier soils, more resilient ecosystems, sustainable rural areas and a fair transition towards a more sustainable future.
Our name reflects the four ideas at the heart of everything we do: Nature, Environment, Sustainability and Transformation.
But NEST is also a nest: a place where ideas can grow, different perspectives can meet and new collaborations can take shape.
Our purpose
Our purpose is simple:
To bridge the gap between knowledge and action.
Environmental challenges cannot be addressed by science, policy, business or society working separately. At NEST, we create connections between these worlds and help transform scientific knowledge into solutions that can be tested, understood, shared and applied in real contexts.
We work across disciplines and geographical boundaries, combining research, innovation, environmental assessment, technology, education, communication and participatory approaches.
What we believe
We believe that environmental transformation starts with understanding how natural and human systems interact.
That means looking at soils, ecosystems, agriculture, water, climate and biodiversity not as isolated components, but as parts of interconnected socio-ecological systems.
It also means listening.
Farmers, researchers, public administrations, companies, local communities and citizens all hold different forms of knowledge. Bringing them together can lead to better questions, better solutions and, ultimately, better decisions.
For this reason, co-creation, collaboration and knowledge exchange are central to the way NEST works.
From science to the field
NEST has a strong commitment to applied environmental science.
We support the development, testing and implementation of solutions related to areas such as soil health, ecosystem services, regenerative and sustainable agriculture, climate change, ecological restoration, environmental monitoring and sustainable land management.
We are particularly interested in approaches that combine field knowledge with emerging technologies, including GIS, Earth Observation, remote sensing, environmental sensors, data analysis and artificial intelligence.
The goal is not technology for technology’s sake.
Technology should help us understand the environment better and make better decisions.
Working with people
Environmental transformation is ultimately a human process.
For this reason, NEST promotes participatory approaches in which researchers, practitioners, businesses, administrations and citizens can work together.
Through collaborative projects, workshops, training activities, Living Labs and communities of practice, we aim to create spaces where knowledge can circulate in both directions: from science to society, and from society back to science.
Beyond borders
NEST is based in Seville, Spain, but was created with an international perspective.
We collaborate with organisations, researchers and communities across Europe and beyond, and participate in initiatives related to sustainability, environmental innovation, rural development and international cooperation.
Our ambition is to build long-term partnerships capable of connecting local environmental challenges with wider European and global solutions.
What we do
- Research & Innovation — Applied research and collaborative projects addressing environmental and sustainability challenges.
- Soil & Ecosystem Health — Assessment, monitoring and restoration of soils, ecosystems and the services they provide.
- Sustainable Agriculture & Rural Areas — Supporting regenerative practices, climate resilience, circular approaches and sustainable rural development.
- Environmental Intelligence — GIS, remote sensing, Earth Observation, environmental monitoring, modelling, data science and AI.
- Co-creation & Living Labs — Bringing stakeholders together to design, test and improve solutions in real-world environments.
- Education & Capacity Building — Training, environmental education and knowledge exchange for professionals, communities and citizens.
- Science Communication — Turning complex scientific knowledge into accessible information, tools, visual resources and stories that people can understand and use.
- Projects & International Cooperation — Participating in and coordinating collaborative initiatives at local, national, European and international levels.
Our vision
We envision a future in which environmental decisions are informed by science, strengthened by technology and shaped together with the people and communities they affect.
A future where healthier soils support resilient food systems, biodiversity and climate adaptation; where environmental information is accessible and useful; and where innovation responds to real societal needs.
